The 'Disaster Report' Series Is Coming To PlayStation VR

For many, the Disaster Report series is best known for its terrible voice acting, but the franchise does have a loyal following. Those fans will be happy to know the next entry in the series will support VR.

Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories, as it’s quite brilliantly called, is coming to PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR support, at least in Japan. The game has actually been in development for some time, starting life as a PS3 title with PlayStation Move motion controller support before being reannounced for Sony’s newest console in 2015 under a new developer, Granzella.

The game brings its unique form of survival action, in which players must contend with natural disasters in built up, urban environments, to first-person in PS VR (it’s played from third-person on standard displays). You play as either a male or female protagonist, caught in a blisteringly hot city in the aftermath of a terrible earthquake. You’ll search for a means of escape while avoiding crumbling buildings.

At the very least it doesn’t look like any other PS VR game currently on the horizon. Exploring the crumbling city in VR could be a really interesting experience, even if we have some early concerns about how comfortable the more intense action sequences might be.

A VR demo has already been shown to press (you can see it captured in a stream above), but, according to the game’s official website, it’s also going to release on Japanese PS4s next month. A release date for the full version of the game has not been set, though it’s fully exclusive to PS4, so that rules out possible HTC Vive or Oculus Rift versions.

Unsurprisingly, there’s no word on if Disaster Report 4 will make its way to the US and EU, though we have reached out to the developer to ask about that possibility. The first two entries in the series did, which gives us some hope.
