'Serious Sam VR' Is Officially Coming This Month, New Screenshots Released

When Croteam exploded onto the VR scene at E3 this year, we knew we were in for a treat. The series has always made a name for itself by featuring equal parts blood, gore, and bombastic action and Sam’s first foray into virtual reality aims to be no different. When we got our first taste of the game, it felt like everything fans have ever wanted.

While at first glance it’s easy to write it off as “just another wave shooter in VR,” you’d be missing out on one of the best examples the genre has to offer if you decided to ignore it on that merit. Now, by way of Devolver Digital announement, we officially know that Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope is launching on Early Access on October 17th at a price point of $39.99, putting it in the upper tier of prices for most VR games.

In Serious Sam VR, you’ll lead the resistance on Earth against the Mental alien forces in the first Mental War. According to a press release:

“For the first time, immerse yourself in the universe of Serious Sam – travel the galaxy, meet interesting aliens, and blow the shit out of them all in a mind-blowing, fast-paced, guns-blazin’ virtual reality environment. Get into the action immediately after choosing one of several missions, drop in and start wreckin’ faces. With new enemies and old favorites, players will pick up and master a variety of increasingly insane weaponry – this is serious business, after all. Use your power ups to navigate your skill tree to be the boldest, biggest and most virtual Sam you can be. Customize or upgrade your gear on the Saratoga battlecruiser in-between missions using in-game currency that has nothing to do with real-world currency.”

While this is rather pricey for a wave shooter VR game, all signs are pointing towards Croteam delivering something well worth the price of admission — even if that awesome minigun isn’t being released as an actual peripheral for purchase.

As you can see in the latest screenshots above, Serious Sam VR is both beautiful and bloody — which tends to go very well together. You can get your hands on the game via Steam Early Access for HTC Vive starting on October 17th for $39.99, with Oculus Rift support coming once Touch launches later this year.
