We Played 'Overwatch' in VR Using 'Bigscreen' and It Was Awesome

Instead of recording a typical podcast this week, we decided to play Overwatch together on Memorial Day and record it in VR using Bigscreen. Hope you enjoy! The standard UploadVR Gamecast will be back next week!

A lot of people tell me that after they got their Rift or Vive they can’t imagine ever going back to non-VR gaming. For me, I’ll never reach that point. I love both types of gaming for different reasons and sometimes I don’t want to be fully immersed in a 3D 360-degree world. Sometimes, I want to hang out on my couch, with a gamepad in hand, and just look straight ahead at a TV or computer screen while talking or visiting with friends. Luckily, thanks to Bigscreen, now I can do all of that while also being in VR.

Bigscreen is a social VR application that transports you to a virtual apartment. There are multiple different rooms to hang out in with people in both public and private settings and each person gets a customizable screen that floats in front of them. This screen acts like a portal to your actual desktop, allowing you to do anything on your computer you’d do outside of VR, except you’re inside VR, sharing the space with friends. It’s like a more advanced and social version of screensharing.

In the video above, you can watch a compilation of clips of me, Staff Writer Joe Durbin, and Tech Editor Ian Hamilton, all playing Overwatch together. There were some technical hiccups due to the program still being in beta and Ian’s decidedly terrible internet connection, but everything worked pretty well on my end without any issues. Overwatch isn’t a VR game, but it was a lot of fun to play while hanging out in VR.
