‘Myst’ Creators Announce Price and Release Date for Spiritual Successor 'Obduction'

Cyan Games have finally announced what fans have been eagerly waiting for: the price and release date for the Kickstarted spiritual successor to Myst and Riven, Obduction. According to a press release, Obduction will be available for download from Steam, GOG.com, the Humble Store, the Mac App Store, and the Oculus Store on July 26, 2016 for $29.99.

Rewinding time to when I initially heard about the Oculus Rift all those years ago, the first thing that came to my mind was how great an old-school PC adventure game like Myst would be in VR. Luckily, the creators of that legendary franchise agreed and Kickstarted a creation of their own known as Obduction. While Obduction isn’t built from the ground up exclusive for VR, that doesn’t mean the experience won’t translate over well.

After seeing games like Thunderbird in action first-hand and learning about new experiences such as Loading Human, The Gallery, and XING: The Land Beyond, it’s clear that slow-paced, narrative adventure games are alive and well on VR devices. It’s a natural fit.

“We’re so excited to once again immerse players in new worlds that offer that same feeling that Myst did — of being swept away into a story and environments that become their world,” said Rand Miller, CEO and Co-founder of Cyan. “It’s been invigorating to build this new place with today’s technology to offer the best PC and Mac experience we could. And Obduction in VR crosses an exciting threshold in a new immersive era.”

At E3 2016, people will finally be able to get their hands on Obduction’s VR version for the very first time at the UploadVR E3 Party, complete with new never-before-seen content. Prior to that event, you can expect to see hands-on impressions from us here at UploadVR letting you know what we think of the VR version of the game and how it stacks up to the growing list of competition in this revived genre.

More details to come soon.
