COVR is aiming for a more realistic close-quarters combat experience than the more arcade-leaning Zero Caliber games.
After Onward's development ended, the VR tactical milsim category was left decidedly thin. Tactical Assault VR, still in Early Access, is the most popular current option for players at the moment.
When developer XReal Games announced Zero Caliber: Frostbite last week, it also teased a second game announcement to come this week. Here is the full text of the post from X:
"Alongside FROSTBITE, we’re also working on COVR - a hardcore tactical VR milsim.
Zero Caliber sits between arcade and realism. This does not. COVR is built around deliberate pacing, consequence, and proper CQB execution.
Expect high-stakes solo and co-op missions across tightly designed environments, with a focus on realistic weapon handling, dynamic enemies, and systemic gameplay where your decisions actually matter."
XReal included a link to a playtest sign-up form with the announcement. Both titles are said to be in 'early development' and are expected to release sometime in 2026. XReal did not offer any specificity about planned platforms.
Zero Caliber 2 first released on Meta Quest in August 2024. A 'Remastered' edition hit PC VR in October 2025 and a PlayStation VR2 version is reportedly in development. Time will tell if XReal follows a similar staggered release schedule for Frostbite and COVR.
Zero Caliber: Frostbite can be wishlisted now on Quest.
